Recognizing the need for a board of certification in hospital medicine, the American Board of Hospital Medicine (ABHM) was founded. The ABHM is North America’s first and only board of certification devoted exclusively to hospital medicine --- founded by hospitalists and governed by hospitalists.

The American Board of Hospital Medicine recognizes the vital role that hospitalists play in the delivery of health care in the United States and Canada. Hospital medicine is one of the fastest growing and most dynamic medical specialties in North America and the ABHM is excited about taking the lead in the formation of this much needed board of certification.

The American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) is the official certifying body of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc. (AAPS), overseeing the administration, development, and management of eleven medical specialty boards of certification, representing seventeen medical specialties.

For the first time in the history of medicine physicians may earn board certification in disaster medicine.
